Art from the Beach

The sun is out & it's a wonderful day for a walk out in some of the lovely towns in West Cork or a stroll on the beach....or maybe both. Here at the Heron Gallery, Annabel is an avid beachcomber & designs some beautiful driftwood items which we sell at our shops in Schull & Kinsale. Below are some examples.

Annabel is also designing some works of art made of debris washed up on our local beaches for an upcoming exhibition to highlight the damage caused to marine life. Any usable pieces that can be upcycled such as plastic, rope or twine, black, white or coloured would be gratefully received at the Heron Gallery, Ahakista.

Heron Gallery Café, Ahakista is on the beautiful Sheep's Head Peninsula near Bantry in West Cork, Ireland.
Visitors to the gallery can walk around the productive vegetable , herb and ornamental gardens where much of the produce used in the cafe is grown. The new cafe in the gallery serves fairtrade organic coffee and teas, delicious scones and cakes, and in summer, simple, wholesome lunches using locally sourced organic produce.
There is a lovely sunny terrace for those precious sunny days and free wifi can be accessed both inside and outside.

Menu
Our menu is mainly vegetarian, with the exception of our Thai fishcakes and spicy Gubbeen chorizo and bean soup. We cater for coeliacs and special diets and try to use seasonal locally produced organic veg.
A typical menu includes a choice of 2 soups served with our own brown bread, 3 or 4 specials including quiche, felafel or fishcakes served with our own green salads, and a selection of healthy and not so healthy desserts. Our emphasis is always on fresh, organic, wholesome and beautiful presentation using edible flowers and colour to create art on your plate!

We don’t offer chips and burgers, but children have a few options- homemade spicy wedges, macaroni cheese and homemade mini pizzas. Our soups are always popular with kids too.

We can pack a slow food picnic in a rucksack with picnic blanket, or in a wicker basket. Orders taken in advance please, and can be taken up the hill in our garden or away on a walk.

Well behaved dogs are welcome. Children must be accompanied.

Garden

Our garden is on the West Cork Garden Trail. It is open from Easter until the end of August, when our café is open too.

I love lots of colour, so grow annuals from seed- favourite cottage garden varieties like sweet peas, Californian poppies , sweet Williams and calendula. The ornamental beds and borders are a profusion of colour and scent all summer.

The vegetables are grown in raised beds and a poly tunnel and we have an army of compost bins.

There is a large pond in the field, buzzing with huge dragonflies, a small wildlife pond with resident frogs, newts, water beetles and leeches, and a raised goldfish pond under a rose and wisteria pergola.

There is a young orchard of Irish heritage apples, a wildflower meadow, a shingle garden, and a fenced future forest area, home to our pet kunekune pigs- Fuschia, Fay and Fern.

The garden is always a work in progress, and we are nearing completion of our barefoot path project. The path meanders through the grounds and participants take of their shoes and experience walking on different textures- like cobbles, wood, mud, grass, turf, stones, hot coals etc…It is a do it yourself reflexology workout !As it is done slowly and mindfully, it creates a respectful awareness in children of wildlife, plants and insects around them.

We have 2 dogs, 3 cats and 3 pigs, so well behaved dogs are welcome , but must be on leads . Children also welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.
